To the Editor:—  The Subcommittee on the Teaching of Diabetes in Hospitals of the Committee on Professional Education of the American Diabetes Association desires wide dissemination of these basic elements in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Treatment of Diabetes  Because of its prevalence and chronicity, diabetes mellitus should be the continuing concern of all physicians, regardless of their type of practice. An essential part of treating the condition is teaching the patient how to live with it. As in any educational program, a systematic approach should be used. Each physician should have certain specific objectives clearly in mind as he teaches his diabetic patients.To aid him, the American Diabetes Association has prepared the following check list of 9 basic elements of treatment, which constitutes a minimum program for diabetes management.
