To the Editor:—
I refer to your notation on the Australian Flying Doctor Service (JAMA178:405 [Oct. 28] 1961). I quote: "Today, it serves two-thirds of Australia's population, scattered over 2,000,000 square miles." This statement implies a fanciful idea of the medical services of Australia. In 1960 this service "... saw about 30,000 patients." There are over 10 million of us on this island—either a hardy or a very neglected people."The annual operating cost is about $700,000"—Department of the Treasury, please note! Eleven thousand Down Under doctors—scramble!
