To the Editor:—
The response to the question on postpartum convulsions (199:680, 1967) fails to mention, or at most only implies, that hyperventilation and hypocapnia are very likely factors in the production of the seizures described. This would be so even if other causes such as previously unrecognized epilepsy or hypoglycemia were present. Possibly this was the meaning intended by the answering authority when he said, "these seizures could have been functional (emotional) in origin," but this is not at all clear in the answer.
