To the Editor:—
My attention has been called to a letter from Susan J. Standfast, MD,1 which, commenting on an article by Dr. Philip Rubin,2 says:He has made an error in interpretation of Fig 1.By referring back to Dr. Rubin's source, one discovers that he has borrowed Berkson's poorly labelled graph without the benefit of the statistician's accompanying text which clarifies and correctly describes the figure.I am grateful to Dr. Standfast for absolving me from responsibility for the error she says Dr. Rubin committed. But in looking at her Fig 1,I did not recognize any figure I had ever drawn. I did find in Dr. Rubin's article a figure reproduced from a paper by Berkson and coworkers,3 but the legend (label?) differed from the original one.A reader who scrutinized the communication suggested that the legends of Dr. Standfast's Fig 1 and Fig 2
