Abstract

The 41st annual report on this subject is included in this number of The Journal, as well as in the Directory of Approved Internships and Residencies, since the latter has become too large to be included as a special issue of The Journal.

The annual report contains tables which are occasionally refined from year to year, but whose format generally remains constant so that the serious reader can study the tables and accurately assess the annual trends which they reflect. These tables contain performance data of hospitals with approved internships and residencies as of Sept 1 the previous year, and they are arranged according to whether or not hospitals have medical school affiliation, or on the basis of size, hospital control, and geographic location.

Two additional sections have been added in recent years to accompany the report itself. One section has to do with special studies, some of which are
