Professional standards review organizations are now mandated by recent federal legislation. The Hospital Admission and Surveillance Program has been in operation for almost one year in Illinois. Preliminary results indicate that the average length of stay for approximately 75,000 admissions is 6.2 days. This reflects a "one hospital day" decrease from comparable 1971 data, and resulted in a reduction of approximately $9 million in hospital reimbursements.
