To the Editor.—
In the brief clinical report by Dr Rosch and colleagues entitled "Reduction of Amphotericin B Nephrotoxicity With Mannitol" (235:1995, 1976), there may be an important omission. Nowhere is either the concentration or the volume of the infused mannitol mentioned. Since this report may have important therapeutic implication, it would seem important that the authors list their technique as precisely and unambiguously as possible. Until there are data showing that concentration is irrelevant, it is the obligation of the authors, referees, and editors that all necessary information be contained in the communication. Perhaps much of the conflicting data in the scientific literature today can be traced to ambiguous descriptions of techniques by the original authors and, thus, slight (but significant) variations in the experimental conditions by subsequent investigators.Perhaps with more awareness of the problem, corrective action can be taken.
