Dr. Nigro's letter is most appropriate, from our perspective. We have been concerned not only with what may be errors of omissions but also errors of commission. Although it surely is rare, it is not inconceivable to us that, for a variety of reasons, physicians actively contribute to a patient's suicide. In our own examination of suicides in Sacramento County, it is possible that doctor hostility plays a role in a few of the suicides. Certainly the issue has been explored, albeit tentatively, by others. Some references are as follows:
