Genetic map offers aid in selecting strains for influenza vaccines
New York scientists have established a "genetic map" for influenza viruses that will probably provide a more rational basis for selecting (or not selecting) vaccine strains than has ever been possible.Peter Palese, PhD, Jerome L. Schulman, MD, and Mary B. Ritchey, PhD, have not only identified the genes in influenza viruses that are responsible for attenuation and high growth capacity in vaccine strains, but have a system that may make it possible to tell whether a particular virus is the product of recombination between two other influenza viruses (one human and one animal, for example) and, if so, who the parents are. The scientists are all members of the microbiology department of Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York.The technique has already been used to achieve a more firm characterization of the
