This book is a collection of the papers delivered at the third congress of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine in April 1972. It is divided into three parts: main lectures, roundtable discussions, and free communications.
There are three main lectures: G. S. Dawes on animal physiology and perinatal medicine, M. Manciaux on the organization of perinatal care in Europe, and C. A. Smith on the transformation of neonatology into perinatology. Dawes' paper is a stimulating overview of the contributions of animal physiology to medical care of the newborn. Manciaux surveys the recent experience of European perinatal care organizations. Smith's report is a philosophic look backward at his own entry into the field of neo-natology from which he derives advice for the future perinatologist.
In short, three- to ten-page papers, the round table discussions contain much useful information on new developments in perinatal medicine. The papers vary greatly in quality
