Cytological studies have proven very helpful in the evaluation of conditions in patients with small and solitary bronchogenic carcinomas. The use of the transcricothyroid approach for combined examinations has proven satisfactory in a series of 600 patients, 200 of whom had brush biopsies with retrieval of enough tissue material to warrant cytological diagnosis. The use of the transcricothyroid approach for all studies has been less traumatic and accepted by patients more readily than the conventional transnasal and transoral routes.
