To the Editor.—
It was with a great deal of interest that I read Dr Eric Fine's letter (236:1235, 1976) in which he champions the cause of tailored treatment (total abstinence vs responsible drinking) for alcohol abusers. Having left a 17-year, small-town general practice for the Air Force, my practice suddenly has become one dealing with young people whose lifestyle and problems are substantially different. As part of my duties, I have had the opportunity to sit in on weekly committee meetings on alcohol abuse. I also personally interview each person who has had an alcoholrelated incident or who has been identified by other means. To justify the statements I am about to make would take much more space than a letter allows; thus, the reader will have to be understanding. Our plan here in Germany is to take the young alcohol abuser and expose him to an eight-hour awareness
