This is a simple, completely unpretentious book about interpretation of serum biochemical multitest profiles performed by two specific instruments, the SMA 12/60 and 6/60. Fundamentally the book consists of 100 case reports, with a copy of the strip chart in each instance. The 18 determinations are chloride, bicarbonate, potassium, sodium, urea nitrogen, glucose, total protein, albumin, calcium, inorganic phosphate, cholesterol, uric acid, creatinine, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and aspartate transaminase.
Each patient report includes a history (with physical examination), listing of laboratory results, analysis of the meaning of the results, appropriate references, and a depiction of the actual strip chart. The charts contain comprehensive, helpful information regarding normal (mean ±2 SD), adjacent ±3 SD zones, male-female differences, the most important causes of elevation and decrease, and other helpful notes.
