Convulsions Complicating Colectomy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

JAMA. 1977;238(5):398. doi:10.1001/jama.1977.03280050038010

To the Editor.—  We read the article by Schulak et al ("Convulsions Complicating Colectomy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease," 237:1456) with interest, as we had the opportunity recently to see a patient who had generalized seizures in the same setting. This article points out many of the potential causes for seizures in these patients and was of value to us in approaching our patient. We find it ironic that colectomy, once a procedure prescribed for and accepted as a treatment for epilepsy in major medical centers,1 should now begin to receive attention as a cause.
