Fat and forty is no joke for colorectal cancer victims
Early detection remains the surest way to cut the death toll from colorectal cancer, though a low fat diet may run second. Right now, only 40% to 50% of all colorectal cancer patients survive five years after detection of their cancer, but this percentage could jump to 90% if all neoplastic lesions were caught while still localized, according to figures from the Strang Clinic, New York. Two thirds of the patients with localized disease survive at least ten years.The American Cancer Society estimates that 100,000 new cases of large bowel cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year."The vast majority of Americans who develop colorectal cancer are over age 40 and have no other associated risk factors," observes Sidney J. Winawer, MD, associate attending physician in gastroenterology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York.
