The Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is sponsored by the American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Association for Hospital Medical Education, and Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States. Incorporated in 1956, ECFMG began operation in 1957.
ECFMG was established primarily to serve the public interest by developing a program of education, testing, and evaluating foreign-educated physicians (FMGs) who desire to advance their education in United States hospitals. In carrying out that charge, ECFMG verifies the credentials, evaluates the educational qualifications, and conducts examinations to determine that those FMGs are ready to benefit from graduate medical education in hospitals in this country. Such a program further serves the public interest by helping to assure that such FMGs are properly qualified to assume responsibility, as interns or residents, for the care of patients in hospitals in the United States.
