To the Editor.—
In The Journal's medical news (213:381, 1970) an article is entitled "PGA used to make absorbable suture." Because of the wide distribution of your journal, I think it is important to set the record straight.In the AMA report you mention that "The PGA suture was found to have excellent tensile strength, both in terms of knot pull and straight pull, especially in the first 7-10 days of wound healing." Reference to Dr. Silk's charts as well as Medical World News (July 10, 1970, p 29) reveals that the PGA suture had lost over 40% of its strength within a week of implantation; the tensile strength of the suture was negligible. The significance of this was emphasized in my report at that same meeting and my comments which followed. It has been observed that wound healing in rabbits achieves less than 30% of original tensile strength
