To the Reader.—
With this issue of The Journal your editor of LETTERS bows out to his excellent successor. After 115 months of 501 issues he bids you farewell. That's some 5,000 published letters, not to mention a rather larger number sent to the graveyard. It's been an interesting experience, always fascinating, often amusing, sometimes instructive. It has made friends, never to be met in the flesh, but pleasant to have known in correspondence. It has made a few enemies, thank goodness, all pushed beyond the three heads of Cerberus to the infernal regions. Probably the only individual to have read all those 5,000 letters, I have been punished amply, and will doubtless eventually ascend celestially!Farewell, dear reader. It's been nice to know you. How sad that you will have to endure life's future trammels without my blissful countenance smiling upon you.
