Victims of early heart attacks were found to have elevated levels of serum cholesterol or triglycerides or both in 38 of 58 cases (66%). Blood lipid levels were determined in 179 offspring of 71 probands and were elevated in 52 (29%). It is recommended that all children of early heart attack victims be screened for hyperlipidemia.
