Palpable Breast MassesThe Importance of Preoperative Mammography

JAMA. 1981;246(24):2819-2822. doi:10.1001/jama.1981.03320240027019
Abstract

Mammography has a significant role to play before any breast surgery is performed. Ten cases are described to illustrate five benefits: (1) confirm the presence of an evident neoplasm, (2) define the three breast masses that do not require biopsy, (3) demonstrate ipsilateral multicentricity of breast cancer, (4) discover occult contralateral cancer, and (5) detect occult malignant neoplasia elsewhere in a breast having a mass excised or reconstruction performed.
