To the Editor.—
Dr Crosby,1 writing about Leonardo da Vinci, states that "Leonardo painted only women, an interesting track record for a homosexual."Historically, all that is known is that Leonardo was accused two times of being a homosexual and two times brought to trial. In an age and in a city in which (unfortunately) homosexuals were despised more than murderers and avoided more than lepers, and in which a conviction would have meant the death penalty, Leonardo was found innocent both times.I wonder on what basis Dr Crosby finds him posthumously guilty.
