The apparent success and popularity of this annual review of medicine, at least among physicians in Great Britain, are attested to by its continued publication for nearly a century. The editors have succeeded in enlisting 48 leading practitioners of medicine, surgery, and the specialties to provide sections on a complete array of subjects. Each has selected several contributions from the literature of the previous year and provided a concise summary with brief critical comments. For several of the 32 sections, which cover this large array of topics, there are both medical and surgical contributors. The material is selected primarily from the English literature, with from one to 32 references in each section; there are only six from journals in other languages (five German and one French).
