I am afraid that Dr Portnoi did not read the original question or answer very carefully. The query was whether there was a physiological or chemical basis for the sense of relaxation that follows exposure to a steam bath. The answer by me stated that at present there is no physiological evidence available to explain such a psychological response. Although I have no quarrel with Portnoi's support for the psychological advantages of steam baths over those of a number of alternate options, I must again emphasize that in the case of elderly persons, the modality must be prescribed with great caution, if at all, a view with which Dr Portnoi appears to agree.
