To the Editor.—  I enjoyed the short article on "Gomers" (243:2333, 1980). I was disappointed, however, that no reference was made to the benchmark treatise on that subject—a novel named The House of God, by Samuel Shem, MD.In his book, Dr Shem poignantly addresses not only gomers, but also their effects on us as physicians. His account of what the practice of medicine does to physicians is accurate. I think that the insights provided by the book make it required reading for anyone engaged in our profession.
