To the Editor.—
We were pleased to see that Wolf et al1 have confirmed our work2 showing that cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for stroke, and somewhat surprised that they did not mention our 1984 article.2 We reported that male cigarette smokers had a twofold and female cigarette smokers a 3.9-fold increased risk of stroke independent of other risk factors.
