The elegant letter by Dr Atkins is absolutely on target; I agree with him completely. My thanks to him for picking up on a point that others may have misinterpreted as well.In no way did I wish to imply that the precautions now in practice in emergency departments are inappropriate. They represent not only medical common sense, but are of absolutely critical importance today. My sorrow was related to what I perceived as the subtle attitudinal change in the feelings of emergency department personnel about critically ill young people. I was not quarreling their use of better and safer technologies.
