Evaluation and the Recent Medical Graduate

Current efforts to improve the methods of evaluating the knowledge and ability of recent medical graduates have served to emphasize the complexity and difficulty of the task, because the process requires several distinct methods and involves several groups.

For the recent medical graduate, two evaluation procedures are critical: one determines the eligibility for appointment to an accredited residency, and the other determines the issuance of a license to practice medicine. The bottom line: Is this graduate knowledgeable, skilled, and competent to care for the patient?

There are qualifiers, required by both evaluation procedures, that are intended to provide the measure of assurance. Both are concerned with documented, educational preparation and the evaluation of the ability of the individual. Both evaluation procedures require satisfactory completion of an acceptable program of medical education leading to the degree, doctor of medicine, or its equivalent.
