The major challenges to the specialty of anesthesiology are both sociological and scientific.

Anesthesiologist Supply  The report of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee indicates that anesthesiology is one of a very few specialties for which a shortage of physicians is projected in the next decade. Today, there are many hospitals, primarily small hospitals in rural areas, that are without the services of an anesthesiologist. It is a goal of our specialty that all patients shall have access to the services of competent anesthesiologists. To this end, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has initiated a series of programs to encourage talented, scholarly physicians to enter the field. We have begun a system of peer review and quality assurance that will help to ensure that practicing anesthesiologists are currently competent. Additionally, the ASA has embarked on a public education program to inform people of the services performed by anesthesiologists
