The major challenges to the specialty of anesthesiology are both sociological and scientific.
The report of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee indicates that anesthesiology is one of a very few specialties for which a shortage of physicians is projected in the next decade. Today, there are many hospitals, primarily small hospitals in rural areas, that are without the services of an anesthesiologist. It is a goal of our specialty that all patients shall have access to the services of competent anesthesiologists. To this end, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has initiated a series of programs to encourage talented, scholarly physicians to enter the field. We have begun a system of peer review and quality assurance that will help to ensure that practicing anesthesiologists are currently competent. Additionally, the ASA has embarked on a public education program to inform people of the services performed by anesthesiologists
