Noting that between 30% and 40% of the 1.4 million qualified nonretired registered nurses in the United States are, by their own choice, not working in nursing, and that "the number of new nurse graduates available to fill the jobs is declining at an ever increasing rate," the American Hospital Association says a multidisciplinary comprehensive approach is needed to find long-range solutions. The AHA, which is in the midst of a national public service campaign to help hospitals overcome this problem, suggests among other things that "activities or programs that enhance the physician's perception of the nurse as a professional colleague should be an ongoing responsibility of the hospital medical staff."
