In Reply. —  Dr Chen is correct about one part of the phonetic translation of one child, one family. Du, not do, is correct. However, in Mainland China, we call one child, one family du sheng zi nu instead of yi jia yi hai. In this instance, du sheng zi nu does not mean only son, only daughter because in this phrase zi nu means "child."Dr Dykers' explanation about the formula of the quality of life is well taken. As mentioned in his letter, to increase the quality of life, China's population must be controlled because of limited resources and technical capacities. Yet, population control would be needed even if China were a developed country. Population control is not only the problem of China and other developing countries, but also that of the whole world. By July 11, 1987, the earth's 5 billionth citizen was born. At the present
