The excellent reputation of Youmans' Neurological Surgery has been established by the first two editions. This tradition persists with publication of a third edition to which some 220 authors have contributed. Most chapters are rewritten, many of them by different individuals, thereby not only updating material, but adding new perspectives in these six volumes.

The diagnostic section now contains a comprehensible discussion regarding the physics of magnetic resonance imaging, as well as a comparison with computed tomography and recommendations as to which modality to select for diagnosis of various lesions. The scan reproductions are of high quality, and the wide variety of abnormalities demonstrated makes this a convenient reference. Positron emission tomography scanning and thermography are new additions presented in this section as well. Although positron emission tomography scanning has not been readily available or particularly useful clinically, the potential is enormous, and its principles are clearly explained.
