This is the fifth edition and second complete revision of the original Lindscog and Liebow text of ThoracicSurgery and Related Pathology published some 40 years ago. The editors state that this book is meant to be encyclopedic and that they "have attempted to include all that is known in each field."
This is, indeed, a considerable collection of knowledge, presented in two volumes for ease of handling. Volume 1 is slightly smaller and devoted to thoracic surgery, volume 2 to congenital and acquired cardiac disease. Only one chapter in either volume addresses any aspect of vascular surgery outside of the chest.
The editors have done a remarkable job of assembling 224 authors who are recognized leaders in their fields to write readable chapters on diverse subjects with minimal overlap. They are certainly "international in scope," with 37 not from the United States.
