We appreciate the comments by Dr Grossman; the questions posed are interesting and pertinent. With regard to the first, no, we have not carried out a multivariate regression analysis of the value of ambulatory blood pressure with all other predictive variables taken into consideration. However, at the International Symposium on Blood Pressure Variability held in Gent, Belgium, in June 1981, we reported on a backward, stepwise, linear logistic regression analysis on a set of 11 prognostic variables. These include average office pressures, office-ambulatory disparity, coefficients of variation for ambulatory blood pressure, age, sex, therapy status, and presence or absence of fundal and ECG abnormalities. Office-ambulatory systolic disparity was one of the four variables most significantly related to outcome (the greater the disparity, the better the prognosis).With regard to the second question, our sample of 1,076 patients included 684 who were white and 241 who were black.
