In the Aug 1 issue of Sports Illustrated (pp 62-77), there was a good article on the apparent widespread use of anabolic steroids by participants in almost every American sport, but especially among weight lifters. Although I was aware that some athletes did this, I did not know that the practice was nearly so commonplace as it apparently is. Since I read that article, I have found that two of my patients were using the drugs and would not have told me about it if I had not asked about the practice specifically. Both told me that they really did not consider themselves to be taking a drug, at least not one that I would be concerned about.I believe the medical community needs to be more aware of this problem, and some effort should be put forth to control it.
