This textbook is a comprehensive treatise on virtually all facets of benign enlargement of the prostate. The importance of the subject is indicated by the fact that greater than 80% of men older than 50 years will be affected by this disease.

In this text, the subject matter is broken down into ten sections, each with its own section editor. The first three sections deal with the evolution of benign prostatic hypertrophy, the structure and function of the prostate, and endocrine control of the prostate. The next four sections comprise an extensive presentation of the effects of prostatic obstruction and its measurement, both experimental and clinical. Three sections then describe surgical indications, techniques, and results of treatment. Finally, there is an annotated bibliography provided as a concluding section, which, in addition to the references supplied the end of each chapter, serves to compile key references according to their value for
