Buying Gluten-Free Food

JAMA. 1986;255(3):326. doi:10.1001/jama.1986.03370030044024

To the Editor.—  I am very sorry that Dr Turner's patient had to put up with those desiccated, nontasty puffed rice disks.1 I would have sent her to the nearest Oriental store to purchase a rice cooker and a 25-lb bag of long- or short-grained rice. I would also have told her that potato, corn, and soy flour should be satisfactory, and furthermore, I would have recommended that she talk to a dietician about cooking a gluten-free diet. Many people live quite happily without gluten-containing food.2-4
