One does not read very much of this book before finding that its author is impressed with the necessity of a surgeon knowing his anatomy; anatomical relations are frequently and carefully given, so that the reader will not have to turn alternately from the book in hand to an anatomy. In very many respects the book is an excellent manual of operative surgery; it is well written, and the illustrations are good. But some matters which may be regarded as important are omitted: for example, no mention is made of the treatment of stricture of the urethra by electrolysis, of the operation of shortening the bones in extensive injury to soft parts; the very important details of correct operative procedures in cases of rupture of the bladder are omitted.
