The author of the volume before us will be remembered by many American readers who attended the last International Congress for the able paper that he presented and discussions that he took part in, as well as for his genial, kindly manner. The first edition of this work has been well known, but has been completely rewritten by the author for this, the second edition. In reading the book one cannot but be impressed with the clearness of the explanations and the practical character of the advice. The beauty, fulness and correctness of the illustrations enhance the value of the work very greatly. The colored illustrations, which are beautifully executed, are much better than those of any similar text-books with which we are acquainted. The chapters on diseases of the nose and ear might advantageously be increased in number, in order to make the work still more complete. It will
