From the editor's preface we extract the following:
" Its wide scope, its clear expression, and its excellent illustrations made it (the first edition) a favorite; and these characteristics have been preserved in the American edition now offered. The work has undergone thorough revision wherever necessary, and many new illustrations from the most recent foreign and domestic monographs have been added, and such changes in the text have been made as recent changes in theory and practice required. Some rearrangement has been made of the text, and a brief chapter on the outlines of military surgery has been added. To make room for the new matter and new illustrations, without materially increasing the bulk of the book, certain portions of the former chapters on diseases of the skin, diseases of the eye, diseases of the ear and larynx as were not strictly surgical, have been omitted.
