It is impossible in a paper of this kind to consider more than the most important points in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The various special treatments that have been recommended for this condition cannot be discussed. A bibliography will be appended, but no attempt will be made to give any extended references to the many excellent papers that have appeared on the subject. The object of this paper is to call attention to certain well-defined principles which must govern the treatmetn of this serious and stubborn disease, if any satisfactory outcome is to be hoped for.

While this paper deals only only with the treatment of diabetes, it is necessary for purpose of clearness to refer briefly to the etiology of the disease. A small percentage of cases are caused by some severe pre-existing pathologic condition that removes them from consideration in a paper of this kind. Such cases
