The present edition of this manual has undergone a more thorough revision than its predecessors, with the addition of much new matter. The list of topics revised or considered the first time includes over forty titles. The attempt to confine the work largely to the more practical aspects of medicine, etiology, diagnosis and treatment makes it possible to present a vast amount of useful information within the compass of a single volume. Still so much condensation becomes necessary that some of the more important topics receive a more notice. Thus the glycyl-tryptophan test for gastric cancer is dismissed in a line which leaves the student as ignorant as before of its nature or significance. It may be questioned whether such references as this are of any practical value, although, of course, their omission would lay the work open to the charge of incompleteness.
