The object of this short but complete treatise on appendicitis is well summed up in the preface to the first edition published in 1904. The writers stated at that time that they has tried to write from the standpoint of the practical surgeon, and before whom a constant stream of illustrative cases is passing. The warm reception accorded this first edition shows how much this method of treating the subject was appreciated. In the preface to the present edition the authors state that they delayed rewriting the book because there were so few new and good contributions to the subject.

In view of the fact that the relation of the movable cecum to constipation and to the pain which recurs after appendectomy has been performed, is attracting much attention at present, especially in German literature, it deserves to have fuller mention here.
