Abstract

In this work the author has reproduced with additions the Lumleian Lectures delivered before the Royal College of Physicians of London, 1897, and published in the Lancet. These lectures form parts of chapters 1 and 2, and nearly the whole of chapters 6, 8 and 9. Chapter 7 was the Clinical Lecture delivered at the University College Hospital, which appeared in the Lancet for September, 1897. With these exceptions the remaining matter is entirely new.

This author, who is well known in other biological fields, in this volume is seen at his best. Nothing unnecessary, nothing redundant, the sentences go straight to the mark with the practiced skill of the literary expert. The student wishing to acquire knowledge of this interesting disease, and the practitioner wishing to refresh his memory and gain additional knowledge, will be charmed with this work by Bastian, and as of its accuracy there is no
