Transferable Record of Professional Standing Necessary.  A system by which information may be had of those legally entitled to practice medicine is sadly needed. The ignorance regarding the number of physicians in a county or state is a reflection on the business sagacity of our profession, to say the least. There is hardly a state in which it is possible to make more than a fair guess as to the number of physicians it contains, and he would be bold, indeed, who would assert that he knew within 10,000 how many physicians, legally entitled to practice, there are in the United States. This uncertainty as to numbers is an evidence of ignorance as to other important facts relative to the profession taken individually and collectively.
