After many false starts and dashed hopes, Ann, my older sister, has finally started across her own personal bridge of no return. I visited her today at her urban medical center. She was sequestered in a pseudo–bubble room and had continuous infusions of lethal chemotherapeutic agents and ondansetron running as we caught up on recent events. By the weekend she will be depleted of both her lymphoma cells and her own precious healthy white blood cells, those loyal friends who will fight to the death to keep her alive and well.
