An expansion of treatment options is urgently needed to tackle the cholera epidemic in Haiti, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in an appeal to the international community (http://tinyurl.com/25voopc). The epidemic, which began in late October, is putting hundreds of thousands of lives at risk and could affect up to 650 000 people in the next 6 months, he said.
According to surveillance data through December 3, 2010, provided by the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population, the epidemic had spread nationwide, with 91 770 cases of cholera and 2071 deaths reported.
