Legislation to give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) greater oversight authority over the nation's food supply was signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 4.
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (HR 2751 [http://tiny.cc/7o33g]) will create shared responsibility between the FDA and food manufacturers to keep the food supply safe, require manufacturers to implement systems to help prevent outbreaks, require more FDA inspection of domestic and foreign food facilities, and give the agency new enforcement tools, including the authority to issue mandatory recalls.
