In a December 17 letter to the heads of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice, Sen Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa) asked these federal agencies to explain how they are allocating resources to combat criminal health care fraud through the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program (http://tiny.cc/87n6f). Although Congress boosted funding by $198 million in fiscal year 2009 to fight health care fraud against federal programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, criminal prosecutions remained stagnant and criminal convictions decreased.
