The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil to prevent anal cancer in males and females aged 9 through 26 years.
The new indication is the latest for the vaccine, which was first approved to prevent cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancer caused by certain strains of HPV in adolescent girls and young women and later approved for preventing genital warts in males and females. The vaccine can prevent the development of such conditions only if an individual is vaccinated before acquiring the virus.
