Scientists have used cells from a patient with long QT syndrome to develop a new stem cell model of this life-threatening heart condition, which features abnormal ion channel function (Itzhaki I et al. Nature. doi: 10.1038/nature09747 [published online ahead of print January 16, 2011]). The researchers, from the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, generated induced pluripotent stem cells from the patient's fibroblasts and coaxed them to become cardiac muscle cells displaying abnormal electrical activity typical of the syndrome.
